Today’s post is about a subject that can have a severe effect on the body image and self-esteem of the individual affected. Acne. I am mentioning hormonal acne (because this is what I experience), but methods that helped me might help someone else with managing other types of acne. Or not. Every skin is different and we don’t know what will work for us unless we try it. Sometimes is all that we have left plain and simple trial and error method.
What are hormonal acne?
Hormonal acne are caused by fluctuations in our hormones. They can affect women in any age and many factors may cause them, like menstruation, polycystic ovarian syndrome or menopause.
About my skin
My skin is normal to combination, 32 years, slightly dehydrated when not treated properly. I never had acne issue, even in my teen years. Every once in a while a little pimple would appear, but without leaving any scaring on my skin. Things changed after I began working and after I became a mom – the stress level increased, so my skin changed also. I had much more skin issues, including mayor acne breakouts, but I have successfully managed this with few steps I added after being ‘exposed’ to Korean skincare routine 🙂 This doesn’t mean that you have to change all your products and use only Korean skincare products. This post is more about the method and not so much about the products. I don’t use only Korean skincare products, but the ones I do use, I love.
Two steps I included/modified in my skincare routine helped my skin: proper cleansing and hydration. When I used to clean my face before, I never really payed attention to it. I washed my face with gel cleanser and/or micellar water and thought that that was enough. But it wasn’t, at least not for my skin.
Double clensing method
When skin is not cleaned properly, we can experience breakouts, irritation, and clogged pores. I clean my face with double cleansing method: first I use an oil based cleanser and then I wash my face with gel cleanser. All products I use are really affordable, yet effective. Currently, I’m loving the Balea line (their cleansing oil and gel face wash). Of course, I have to mention my favorites: Heimish All Clean Balm and COSRX Low ph Good Morning Gel Cleanser.
Something that is also very important after cleansing your face is restoring your ph level of the skin. Wrong ph level of the skin can cause dehydration which can also cause breakouts. Usually, our skin after cleansing won’t be at the optimal 5.5 pH level and now this is where toner is so critical (I stay away from ones with alcohol).
In couple of my posts before I have mentioned Benton Aloe BHA skin toner and wrote a review. I love this stuff so much! I don’t use it every evening, sometimes instead I will use Meishoku fragrance free astringent or Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium Lotion. They are both also excellent for hydration of the skin.
These minor yet great changes in my skincare routine helped my skin looking and feeling great without any acne breakouts. I also have to mention the importance of exfoliation once a week and using all other products that are suited for your skin type.
This is something that changed my skin for the better and I hope that this post maybe helps someone else.
