Healthy choices – breakfast first – overnight oats

Breakfast…always on the go and so little time to make it. So why not make it the night before?

We all know that the breakfast is the most important meal of the day and if we start the day right, we will try to make healthy choices trough out the whole day.

Many people like to make their breakfast fast and easy or they will skip it. One of my favorite type of breakfast is oatmeal. Even though I don’t find cooking it takes too much of my time, many people choose the instant oatmeal type which are faster to make but often have added sugars and artificial flavors…and then it isn’t such a healthy option anymore.

Sometimes, instead of classic oatmeal, I like to make my oats overnight. The most common mixture is equal parts of raw rolled oats, milk and/or yogurt. You can use any kind of yogurt or milk. I usually use unsweetened almond milk or oat milk and if I put yogurt, it is a Greek yogurt. This is the base.

Put in the fridge overnight (uncovered or covered, your choice) and let ’em soak up the liquids. There is no cooking involved and your meal is ready to go right from the fridge. Or if you like it a bit warmer, you can heat it up in the microwave (30-60 seconds).

In the base you can put Chia seeds, almonds, nuts, honey (or maple syrup), blueberry, banana, apple, cinnamon,…variations are many.

This is my favorite recipe:

1/2 cup oats
1 tablespoon oat bran
1 tablespoon Chia seeds
pinch of cinnamon and soak it all in
1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk and
1/2 cup water.

I put it all in a large mason jar and cover and store it in the fridge overnight. In the morning I put chopped almonds, frozen cherries, bananas and honey and mix it all up. I also like this type of oats but with grated apple instead of cherries and bananas.
